My Dry January Experience
I truly believe that we have the power to make significant changes in our lives no matter what time of year it is. But I can’t lie, there’s just something about the clock striking midnight on January 1 each new year that feels equivalent to hitting a reset button.
Some people create verbal or written lists of New Year’s resolutions. These may include developing a new gym regimen, eating healthier, taking up a new hobby, you name it.
For some, participating in what is known as “Dry January” is part of their start to the new year.
Unbeknownst to me, Dry January officially began in the United Kingdom in 2013. I had no idea it was that recent! The campaign has spread worldwide since then and includes millions of participants each year who willingly abstain from alcohol for the first 31 days of the year.
I would consider myself to be a moderate drinker. I love wine and am also a vodka soda fanatic. On average, I drink wine with dinner most days of the week. Unwinding with a glass or two is part of my evening ritual.
Ever since I first heard of Dry January, I have been intrigued by the concept but never seriously considered partaking in it. No alcohol for 31 whole days? What am I going to replace my wine with? How do I even socialize without it?
